California – Renewing Patient State Registration Instructions
Renewing your California Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) through your county health department doesn’t have to be overwhelming. This step-by-step guide walks you through the entire MMIC renewal process—from updating your medical cannabis recommendation with a CMed licensed provider to preparing your required documents and completing the in-person county appointment. We’ll show you exactly what you need for your renewal, how to schedule your evaluation, and what to expect once your county processes your application—making it easy to maintain continuous access to California’s medical cannabis program.
Renewing Patient Instructions
1. Verify Your Physician’s Recommendation
To renew your MMIC, you must have an updated medical cannabis recommendation from a licensed physician.
Your CMed provider will issue your new recommendation during your renewal appointment.
2. Prepare Required Documents
Bring the following documents to your renewal appointment at your county health department:
-
Valid government-issued ID
-
Proof of California residency
-
Your updated physician’s recommendation
Counties follow the same documentation requirements for renewals as they do for new applicants.
3. Apply In-Person (Required for Renewals)
Renewals must also be completed in person at your county health department.
Your county will:
-
Confirm your updated recommendation
-
Review your documents
-
Take a new photo
-
Collect your renewal fee
4. Pay the Renewal Fee
Renewal fees are typically up to $100, depending on the county.
Low-income patients may qualify for a fee waiver, just as with new applications.
5. Confirm Receipt & Monitor Status
After submitting your renewal, follow up with your county health department to confirm processing.
This is especially important if your current card is close to expiring.
6. Receive Your New MMIC
Your renewed MMIC will be mailed directly to you.
Once received, it will be valid for one year, starting from the issuance date.
Important Notes
Processing Time: Expect up to 30 days for renewal processing.
Continuous Access: To avoid any gap in benefits, submit your renewal application before your current MMIC expires.
